My daughter Grace is 10 now, which in the world of children’s parties, makes her something of a retired veteran. She’s moved on to "older" things now (like pyjama parties and movie nights), but in her younger years, she went to hundreds of kid’s parties across North London, Middlesex, and Hertfordshire.
Since she’s seen me perform tons of times, I sat down with her to find out what actually makes a party "cool" from a kid’s perspective.
A: "I remember everyone doing the limbo and it was so fun. And, getting a sticker for my dancing, which I was very happy about! Oh, and Chu Chu Wah, I remember that from years ago. I loved that song when you got everyone up and dancing to it, even the parents, even though some didn’t really want to!”
A: "I love it when you do that thing where your hat falls off your head. Or that trick where the magic wand hits you in the face. It’s so funny. Also, do you remember that one time with that boy who kept trying to pull your hat off! That was the funniest thing"
A: "The rabbit! I used to like playing catch with it. I liked the monkey too because he looked really cute hanging onto things. Actually, the Teddy bear was my favourite, that was the cutest."
A: "Yeah I think I was quite shy when I was younger. Actually, I was less shy at your parties, because you are my dad. I think because there’s always magic and music and things to do, most kids don’t really get that shy once it’s started."
A: "Yes, the one where you read the child’s mind to find their card. I still can't work it out. It’s actually quite annoying, you have told me how it works and I’ve forgotten. Actually, wait, did you tell me how it works!? Can you tell me (again)?"
A: "That time at that party in Mill Hill with the feather trick, remember?! It totally went wrong. You dropped the feather on the floor, the one you should have been hiding. But everyone just laughed so it didn't really matter. It was just funny."
A: "Make sure you have lots of things – magic, disco, giant bubbles, circus and everything. Actually, you need to just make sure the kids are laughing. That’s the most important bit. Especially the birthday boy or girl, they need to be having a good time. If all the kids are happy, the party is good."
A: "Stickers. Definitely stickers. I remember at one of my parties, all the kids wanted a sticker, as they wanted to be seen as the best dancer. Also, playing a really great song and telling the kids that the best dancer will win a special balloon animal later on. Everyone will dance then as all kids love balloons!"
A: "I’d want you to make your big magic box float. Like, it just follows you around and goes up and down in the air without you even touching it. That would be so cool."
A: "Just that everyone had a great time. Especially me! Oh and having my dad as the entertainer"
A: "Every single person needs to feel like they are part of it. You have to make sure everyone is included in all the activities, so nobody is just sat there not doing everything."
A: "Calling a boy by the wrong name! That was so embarrassing. I counted, you did it 4 times, and I was just like... 'Dad, can’t you get it right!'”
"Well, there you have it! The brutal honesty of a ten-year-old. Grace, thank you for the 'expert' advice. However, I feel I must point out that while you remembered me getting a child’s name a few times, you managed to use the word 'actually' about 20 times during this interview!”

This interview was conducted with Grace 🦄✨🌈, who is officially the Senior Party Critic of Richie Rich Parties.
